Most Baby Boomers remember back in the day that the "rich kids" owned the new Chevelles, Mustangs, GTX's, etc. , and everyone else was transplanting small blocks into Tri Five Chevies. The young segment of America needed an inexpensive mainstream model with an inexpensive special engine. Chrysler executives realized this, and began designing big engine, low frill unibody performance cars.
The Road Runner is recognized by many automotive experts as perhaps the second most significant Muscle Car in history, next to the GTO. This amazing machine almost single handedly shifted the market back to the most bang for the buck roots of the movement. The success of the Road Runner would quickly surpass that of the more expensive GTX. Plymouth corporate sales estimate for 1968 was 2,500. Actual sales of the hardtops and pillar coupes was approximately 45,000. In 1969, this number increased to a whopping 82,292 units. Indeed they had hit the mark! The automotive industry praised the simplicity of the concept.
In 1976 the Road Runner name was switched to the 2-door model of the replacement for the Valiant series. This car, based on the new F platform, would be known as "Volaré". The new Road Runner was primarily a trim and graphics package; however, many suspension parts were borrowed from the police packages. A 360 CID engine was offered as an option (but only with a two barrel carb for 1976-'77 and single exhaust) to the standard 318 V8, but only paired with the 3-speed automatic transmission.
The Super Pak option consisted of Road Runner tape stripe, front air spoiler, wheel opening flares, quarter window louvers, and rear spoiler. In the era of gas sipping, puny compact cars, the Road Runner was still able to provide some punch and also an aggressive look for the younger crowd.
The body has been refinished in Spitfire Orange. Paint would be classified as high driver quality, not a $15,000 show finish. Finish has been buffed to a high gloss. Blacked out hood, rear valance, lower body, quarter louvers, and spoiler. T/A dual snorkel hood scoop. Blacked out sport grille. Chrome and brightwork in very good shape.
