THIS BEAUTY IS ONE OF THE 1964 1/2 PRE- PRODUCTION HARDTOP AND CONVERTIBLES THAT WERE BUILT. Prior to regular factory retail Mustang production, approximately 185-211 pre- production units were manufactured. These Mustangs were not built on the assembly line. Rather, they were hand assembled at the Pre- Production Prototype Warehouse in Allen Park, MI. These coupes and convertibles are all easily identifiable by an 05C (March 5th) scheduled build date. These vehicles were built for, and their DSO (District Sales Office code) reflects- engineering tests, The New York World’s Fair, promotional and display purposes, and shipped to such racing teams as Holman-Moody and Alan Mann Racing in England. The DSO is found on factory documentation and the vehicle identification plate (door tag). None were intended initially for sale to the public. Number 100001, now on display at the Ford Museum, was originally assigned to Ford of Canada District Sales Office, to be displayed at Ford of Canada showrooms coast to coast, then be returned to Dearborn. It was accidently sold by an over-zealous salesman to a pilot in Newfoundland, Canada. It was later recovered by Ford, restored, and put in the museum.
