1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone
Click Photo (More Info.)

ULTRA RARE K CODE, FOUR SPEED CYCLONE. ONE OF FOUR PRODUCED WITH FACTORY V CODE MAIZE EXTERIOR COLOR!

THIS CLASSIC EXAMPLE IS ONE OF THE RAREST 1964 MERCURY COMET CYCLONES IN EXISTENCE TODAY. THERE WERE 7,454 CYCLONES BUILT IN 1964. ACCORDING TO MERCURY ENTHUSIASTS, THERE MAY HAVE ONLY BEEN FOUR CYCLONES PRODUCED IN FACTORY V CODE MAIZE. THIS COULD BE ONE OF ONE AS BUILT WITH THE COLOR/DRIVETRAIN COMBINATION. BLACK AND WHITE BUCKET SEAT INTERIOR. K CODE 289 CU. IN. ENGINE MATED TO A FOUR SPEED TRANSMISSION. 93,019 MILES.

A supplemental bulletin was issued by Mercury to PPG, adding three colors to the Mercury vehicle lineup, February,1964, half way through the production year. The three new colors were Pecan Frost Poly, Cypress Green Poly, and Maize. These three colors were so rare, it is hard to find a color chip example on any existing color chart. It is speculated that four Cyclones rolled off the assembly line in Code V Maize. This car is one of them, as denoted on the original factory door tag.

When we found this rare piece, it had been repainted years ago in Pacific Blue. We immediately sent the Cyclone to the restoration shop, for a complete exterior refinish. Paint was completed in December, 2008. Finished in base coat/ clear coat. Chrome and stainless is mostly original and in very good shape. All glass is in very good condition. Dual sport mirrors. American Racing five spoke wheels with radial tires.

The history of the K code Cyclone engine for 1964 is another of those fascinating, little known anecdotes. Ford, of course, was obsessing over it's new Mustang in 1964 and 1965. According to published historical records, Fran Hernandez, Director of Mercury Performance was at odds with Lee Iococca concerning the K code engine. Hernandez wanted to include the 289, 271 HP High Performance engine in the Cyclone package. According to available public record, Iococca did not want any attention taken away from the new Mustang and the Fairlane, who featured the 271 HP engine as an option. There appeared to be a considerable amount of interdivision rivalry between the two companies, fueled by Mercury's racing success in the early sixties. At some point, the engine option for Mercury was deleted and they were left with the D code 289/210 HP engine. At this point, Mercury engineers decided to improvise. They installed the 600 CFM Autolite four barrel carb from the 352 engine, a different manifold, and other changes that elevated the horsepower to approximately 230. They designated this engine the K code. This change actually worked in Mercury's favor. There was some confusion among buyers, and the Comets actually outsold the Fairlanes.

This vehicle has the designated K code engine. Currently sporting an Edelbrock Competition Series four barrel carb and Edelbrock aluminum intake. However, the original Autolite carb, with factory tag still affixed, and factory intake manifold are with the car. The remaining engine components and engine bay are factory stock. Manual steering. Manual brakes. Four speed transmission. 3.25:1 rear differential. Undercarriage is not highly detailed, but it is extremely clean and solid as a rock.

Factory Black and White bucket seat interior. Floor console with shifter. Factory gauges. Cyclone tach mounted on dash. All components of the interior are in very good condition.

Don't miss out on this opportunity. This is a rare, investment quality Classic.

CHECK BACK OFTEN FOR THE NEW VIDEO, WHICH IS CURRENTLY IN PRODUCTION. WE ARE GATHERING MORE INFORMATION AND WILL RELEASE A NEW VIDEO THAT FURTHER DISCUSSES MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE 212, EARLY MUSTANGS, AND ALSO ALL THE MUSTANGS IN OUR RARE COLLECTION.

THE FIRST MUSTANG TO BE ISSUED A VIN NUMBER FOR RETAIL SALE ON MARCH 9,1964, THE FIRST DAY OF MUSTANG PRODUCTION AT THE DEARBORN ASSEMBLY LINE! ALSO THE FIRST MUSTANG SOLD TO THE PUBLIC!

Prior to regular factory retail Mustang production, approximately 211 pre- production VIN numbers were issued and pre- production units were manufactured. These coupes and convertibles are all easily identifiable by an 05C (March 5th) scheduled build date. These vehicles were built for, and their DSO (District Sales Office code) reflects- engineering tests, research and study, The New York World’s Fair, promotional and display purposes, and shipped to such racing teams as Holman-Moody and Alan Mann Racing in England. The DSO is found on factory documentation and the vehicle identification plate (door tag). None were intended initially for sale to the public. Number 100001, now on display at the Ford Museum, was a pre production unit that was hand built along with all other pre production Mustangs at the Allen Park, Mi. Pre-Production Prototype Warehouse in Jan./Feb of 1964. It was not the first car off the assembly line. It was originally assigned to Ford of Canada District Sales Office, to be displayed at Ford of Canada showrooms coast to coast, then be returned to Dearborn. It was accidently sold by an over-zealous salesman to a pilot in Newfoundland, Canada. It was later recovered by Ford, and put in the museum.

First day of scheduled factory retail production, for sale to the public, was March 9,1964. On that day, scheduled production began with VIN number 212. It has Factory internal markings to distinguish the car as "JOB 1". Mustangs with a scheduled build date of March 9 are easily identifiable by an 09C (March 9) code on factory paperwork and the door tag.

We guarantee, as per our research, that Mustang 100212 is the first Mustang to be issued a VIN number for retail sale on March 9, 1964, the first day of Mustang production at the Dearborn Assembly Line. The vehicle was owned by the same gentleman from 1982-2007. It was in the Towe Auto Museum in California for 2 tours totaling almost 10 years. In 2006, William Clay Ford borrowed the car for his granddaughter’s wedding in Florida.

Lee Iacocca and the marketing team devised an ingenious advertising launch for the Mustang. On the evening of April 16, 1964, a 60 second commercial was displayed on the three major networks, inviting everyone to flock to the dealerships on April 17, the first day of availability to the public. This also coincided with the introduction of the Mustang on April 17 at the New York World’s Fair. The marketing campaign was an overwhelming success- almost 22,000 Mustangs were sold the first day and over 400,000 in the first 12 months.

Mustang Convertible 100212 was sold at Powell Ford in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The dealership delivered the Mustang on the evening of the 16th, even though the official first day of sale was the 17th. That makes this Mustang Convertible also the first Mustang sold to the public! Among the extensive documentation is the original Internal Bill of Sale, which indicates on the bottom "Retail Delivery 4/16/64." and is initialed by the Sales Manager. Therefore, this vehicle is not only the first scheduled Mustang intended for sale to the public, but also the first Mustang sold to the public.

The car was delivered with the following options: Wimbleton White- Base 260 2V V8 Engine- Cruise-O-Matic Transmission- Rally Pac- Power Brakes- Power Steering- Power Convertible Top- Padded Visors- Back Up Lights- Heavy Duty Battery- Full Length Console- Tinted Windshield- Pushbutton Radio and Antenna- Rocker Panel Mouldings- Wheel Covers Deluxe with Spinners- Magic Aire Heater Delete and Credit- Seat Belt Delete and Credit- White Wall Tires- Outside Mirrors (2)__Compass- Inside Day- Night Mirror 2 Spd Electric Wiper and Washer.

Documents include but are not limited to: A) Ford Registered Owner’s Plan Card(warranty card) B) Owner’s manual C) Internal Bill of Sale D) Window Sticker E) Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin F) A copy of every title and owner history G) Transcript of an interview with the original selling salesman, who was still working there in 1984 H) Documents and photos from the Towe Museum in California, where it was on display as The Featured Mustang for 2 tours totaling almost 10 years I) A letter from Director Emeritus William Clay Ford . In this letter, Mr. Ford thanks the previous owner for the use of his historic automobile at his granddaughter’s wedding in 2006. His granddaughter and her husband drove away in this vehicle after the wedding ceremony. J) Restoration photos and receipts K) Pages upon pages of stories, facts, research, interviews, history, and memories from 24 years of ownership. L) Volumes of photos, including the original selling salesman with the car in front of the dealership 20 years after the original sale. M) Of course, the door tag, verifying the VIN number, scheduled build date, and the retail DSO.

A painstaking restoration was performed on the car, completed in 1983. However, due to meticulous care and storage, the Mustang looks nearly as fresh as the day it rolled out of the restoration shop.

This piece of automotive history is on display in our showroom, next to Pre- Production Mustang Convertible 100093.
