71 Dodge 383 Challenger.... Rare 1 of 1
Click Photo (More Info.)

In the spring of 1971, a deputy sheriff with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, talked with his supervisor into the thought of purchasing a muscle car that could be used for undercover surveilance work in dealing with the drug trafficing, which was the main crime of that era. On May 30, 1971 this car was ordered through Claude Short Dodge in Santa Monica, California and equipped with a 383 4 barrel and Torqueflite automatic transmission. This order was routed through the Hamtramck, MI plant because the LA plant was shutting down there production of Challengers. On July 9th 1971 the last day of Challenger production this car built. This is believed to be the last Challenger shipped to California. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department took possession of the car in August 1971, there name was listed on the original sales receipt and the title. One of the options "as there were many" was the order of AM radio with the console mounted cassette recorder which was used to record stakeouts and then eventually was used in court to help convict criminals. The mechanics at Claude Short Dodge did some high performance modifications to the 383 to keep up with the other muscle cars, and the modifications are still installed on the car. 1. Edelbrock Aluminum intake manifold. 2. Headers. 3. 3:55 Sure grip differential. 4. Reworked and ported heads. The only additional work that has been done to the car since the original owner, is the new vinyl top and 1 factory repaint in 1972 due to the original Plum Crazy paint flaking off. The car is all numbers matching with a very detailed paper trail which includes 2 build sheets, the original window sticker, and the Mopar Collector guides full feature article on the car. This car is very rare factory order police undercover car. Here is the fender tag numbers as the appear on the fender tag from left to right and top to bottom: V5X 26 EN2 M31 M42 M44 N41 R26 G11 H51 J25 J45 M21 M25 V1W U A46 B51 C16 C55 FC7 H6X9 000 709 083496 E65 D32 JH23 N1B 454832 VIN Number JH23N1B454832 THOROUGHBRED INVESTMENT MUSCLE CAR.

1900 AN EDUCATION - BURNOUT 101
Click Photo (More Info.)
IN RESPONSE TO SEVERAL INQUIRIES, WE AT CLASSICMUSCLECARS.COM DECIDED IT WAS TIME TO TALK ABOUT ONE OF THE FEATURES WE HAVE HERE ON THE SITE- THE BURNOUTS.

1) THE BURNOUT AREA- AS YOU VIEW PICTURES AND VIDEOS OF BURNOUTS, YOU WILL IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZE THAT ALL BURNOUTS ARE STAGED IN THE EXACT SAME SPOT. THIS IS NOT COINCIDENCE. THE AREA YOU VIEW IS THE "WATER BOX" HERE AT THE FACILITY. THE WATER BOX IS SET UP LIKE ANY DRAGSTRIP- IT IS A FLAT, CLEAN ASPHALT AREA WHERE WATER IS APPLIED TO ALLOW THE TIRES TO SPIN FREELY IN ORDER TO HEAT UP.

2) THE DRIVER- ALL BURNOUT VEHICLES ARE PILOTED BY TONY BEGLEY, OWNER OF CLASSICMUSCLECARS.COM. TONY IS A LIFETIME DRAG RACER, WRENCH TURNER, AND BODY MAN. TONY HAS BEEN BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THOUSANDS OF CLASSIC CARS.

3) THE VEHICLES- VEHICLES FEATURED IN THE BURNOUT SEQUENCES ARE EITHER FACTORY BUILT HIGH PERFORMANCE CARS OR REBUILT MODIFIED STREET MACHINES.

4)THE BURNOUT- PRIOR TO THE BURN OUT, THE VEHICLE IS CHECKED BY OUR MECHANIC. BEFORE STAGING, VEHICLE IS WARMED UP TO OPERATING TEMPERATURE. TONY STAGES THE CAR IN THE WATER BOX, WHERE AMPLE AMOUNTS OF WATER ARE ADDED. AFTER ROLLING THROUGH THE WATER, THE CAR IS HELD IN POSITION WITH FOOT PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE. TONY THEN SLOWLY BUILDS THE RPM'S ON THE ENGINE, CAUSING THE WET TIRES TO SPIN, HEAT UP, AND SMOKE. BRAKE PRESSURE IS THEN RELEASED, AND THE CAR LAUNCHES.

IN CONCLUSION, AND THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART- WE DON'T ABUSE OUR CARS!
THESE BURN OUTS ARE DISPLAYED TO DEMONSTRATE TWO ATTRIBUTES OF THE CARS; THEY ARE POWERFUL- THEY ARE WELL BUILT AND MECHANICALLY SOLID. THESE CARS ARE BUILT TO DRIVE AND ENJOY. OBVIOUSLY, WE DON'T RECOMMEND 5,000 RPM NEUTRAL SLAMS AND CLUTCH POPS, OR REVVING THE CARS TILL THE VALVES FLOAT, ETC. HOWEVER, WE SELL CLASSICS THAT YOU CAN ENJOY, NOT JUST LOOK AT. TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT, IF A CLASSIC CAN'T STAND UP TO A PROFESSIONALLY STAGED BURNOUT, YOU DON'T WANT TO OWN IT.
